Abstract

Undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate taught (PGT) students account for most of the student body within UK Higher Education Institutions (UK HEIs). Research effort investigating student experience and belonging disproportionately focuses on UGs. In this study we quantitatively assess the satisfaction and experience of PGT students from three UK HEIs (XXXX) across 11 questions representing three broad categories (Overall Experience, Connections, and Events). We test whether two key characteristics, study status (full-time and part-time) and if a student had previous experience at the same university (yes and no), influenced student satisfaction. We found evidence to suggest students were less likely to engage with events, form meaningful connections, and experience a sense of belonging, if they were studying on a part-time basis or if they had studied previously at the same university. We suggest that PGT cohorts need bespoke, flexible support and events over activities designed for their UG counterparts.
