Abstract
Performance [written and directed by R Hand] commissioned for Black Shuck Festival 2026 It is an enormous pleasure to be performing at the 2026 Black Shuck Festival! We are a group of Norwich-based performers including some staff and students from UEA. This evening, we are delighted to invite you into the world of live radio drama as it was experienced during its celebrated 'golden age' in the 1940s. In those days, every broadcast went out live: a thrillingly chaotic blend of skilled voice actors, ingenious Foley artists creating sound effects in real time, and musicians providing live accompaniment. There were no retakes, no editing—only craftsmanship, teamwork and a little theatrical magic. Tonight's performances recreate that unique atmosphere. While the scripts and music have been created especially for this event, the production techniques, sound effects and studio practices are faithful to those used by radio professionals of the era. For a short while, we hope you will feel as though you have stepped back into a broadcasting studio of the 1940s. Our technicians are ensuring the microphones are genuinely live as we record this performance for listeners beyond the theatre, making you not only our audience but also part of the broadcast itself. The first half of the evening presents The Black Shuck Investigations, a tongue-in-cheek mystery inspired by Norfolk's most famous spectral hound. After the interval, we venture into much darker territory with The Pageant, an original horror drama that pays tribute to the chilling traditions of classic radio suspense. Whether you are joining us in the theatre or listening at home, we hope you enjoy an evening of mystery, suspense, laughter and things that go bump in the night.
