Abstract

The self-proclaimed “Demon Dog” of American crime fiction, James Ellroy is a popular yet divisive literary figure. He is best known for his two series of historical crime novels, The L.A. Quartet (1987–1992) and The Underworld USA Trilogy (1995–2009), both of which explore the violent criminal underworld of twentieth-century America. This entry traces the development of Ellroy’s literary career, examining his tumultuous early life and breakthrough as a writer, his principal thematic concerns, and the significance of both local and global environments in his work.
