Abstract

Background: Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA) is associated with a poor prognosis. Early Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) demonstrates an improvement to patient outcome. Health services use volunteer lay responders (LR) to support their OHCA response. Research demonstrates increased prevalence of psychological ill health in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) staff. Response to critical incidents has been identified as a contributing factor. Lay persons may be at risk of psychological injury because of their experiences with OHCA. A recent scientific statement has called for further research into this area.
