Repetitive DNA sequences are dispersed throughout natural genomes, both within and outside of known coding sequences (Charlesworth et al. 1994; Tautz and Schlotterer 1994). The varied distribution of particular repetitive sequences between different species suggests that they fulfil specific cellular requirements, but direct evidence for what these may be is lacking. However, any cellular functions are likely to be restricted to eukaryotes since long repeating sequences are absent from prokaryotic genomes.
