Antony’s referral describes him as a 56-year-old man whose cancer began in the oral cavity; he is experiencing depression and social isolation, alongside an altered sense of identity due to moderate changes in his appearance and speech. He is also having difficulty eating, following surgery to remove part of his tongue and lower jaw. He has had plastic surgery to mitigate some of the resulting facial disfigurement and has been referred to me as an occupational therapist for potential interventions relating to restoring his confidence in work and social settings, alongside practical and psychological preparation for further surgery which is planned for three weeks’ time. MODEL: oral cavity cancer THEORY: disfigurement THEORY: representation of the self APPROACH: eating and drinking THEORY: self-image THEORY: occupational roles APPROACH: psychosocial approaches.
