Abstract

Aiyana was born in Bangladesh and has lived in the UK since early childhood. As a health practitioner working on a busy ward, I am informed of her admission during handover one morning where it is said that she has dementia, cannot communicate and constantly shouts for help. Nothing seems to help calm her down and some staff are becoming tired of asking her to be quiet, as are her fellow patients. There is some discontent growing on the ward over the disruptiveness of her vocalisations. She has shown no interest in food or drink, and it seems that there is no way of finding out from her what she usually drinks and eats.
