The marine and coastal zones provide a wealth of ecosystem goods and services which are fundamental in supporting human livelihoods and wellbeing, such as the provision of resources, regulating carbon and cultural activities. Management of this marine natural capital requires a holistic approach to evaluating potentially competing environmental, economic, social and political factors to optimise sustainable use and equitable access to these shared resources and benefits. However, the ability to achieve optimal service provision is influenced by many factors involving both abiotic (physical, chemical) and biotic (biological) processes that interact at varying scales. As such, achieving a better understanding of how these ecosystem processes interact, how they are impacted by human use, and how this influences their ability to provide varying levels of goods and services, is key to adopting an effective natural capital based approach to sustainable marine management. This project addresses knowledge gaps to advance the implementation of a more informed, natural capital-based approach to future marine management and policy development.
