Abstract

In the Iraq of the Bush administration's imagination, women were to help "give birth to freedom" in the neo-liberal post-Saddam order. But three years after the US-led invasion, and despite vigorous women's activism, Iraqi women have been disempowered - reduced to instruments of political agendas and symbols of communal difference.
