Abstract

In the English-speaking world, Nelly Sachs is best known as a 'difficult' German Jewish poetry. The reception of her work in Germany, the influence upon it of her work as a translator of Swedish poetry, and the effects of her flight from Germany in the Holocaust, all had profound effects on her poetry. How do we translate the poetry to take this complex context into account?
