Abstract

The UK Government consulted on the commencement of Section 40 of the Crime and Courts Act 2013 and the continuation of the Leveson Inquiry with the opening of part 2 of that process. This response to the consultation, submitted through an online form, argued for the immediate commencement of section 40, which provides a vital incentive for publishers to participate in a system of self-regulation that would serve the public. It further argued that Leveson part 2 was still very necessary, especially in light of the renewed attempts for a Sky merger that make the question of whether James Murdoch is "fit and proper" to hold a UK broadcast licence even more important.
