Abstract

Man's role in promoting erosion in the headwaters of the Umsweswe River in central Zimbabwe is determined. A statistical test of the relationship between gully growth and human pressure on land is applied. There is neither firm historical evidence nor contemporary experimental and statistical evidence to support the contention that man has largely brought about the severe erosion in the Umsweswe catchment area.
