Abstract

Institutional shareholders have become an influential force in corporate governance in the last 25 years. In this paper, the trends in share ownership are highlighted together with the resultant emergence of institutional shareholders. Recent developments, in an international context, of the expectations of the role that institutional shareholders will perform, and in particular the implications for their role in shaping corporate governance, are discussed.
