Abstract

The incidence of HIV and AIDS continues to rise internationally. Advances in treatment have decreased mortality and increased life expectancy for people with a positive diagnosis. This article details the epidemiology of HIV and AIDS and, while highlighting the low transmission risk to therapists, outlines the precautions that health-care professionals should take when dealing with body fluids of patients. The authors advise on how therapists should sensitively treat patients with HIV or AIDS, covering important ethical and confidentiality issues.
